About Troy Wells
No one is born knowing how to deal with a teen on drugs. Once you’ve been there, you understand.
Before he launched his career as an addiction counselor, Troy learned about teen addiction the hard way.
“I started drinking and using drugs at the age of 15. I can’t ever remember being overly excited about using, but I do remember that when I was drinking or smoking pot with my friends I felt like I could just be me. It all seemed innocent enough.
By 20 I was dealing and on the street. I was doing harder drugs. I was living as a drug addict. It was killing my family, but I didn’t care. I was dead emotionally. At 22, I tried to clean up. It was either that or prison. I managed to stay sober for 18 months that first time. I never knew how good it could feel to be clean, but as time went on I went back to drugs again and to stealing to support my habit. During those dark years I fathered a child I never got to know, and I chose drugs over the people who loved me.”
Troy was lucky. Hitting bottom changed his life. He used the last bit of hope he had to clean up, better himself and prepare for life as a sober, productive member of society. Troy realized his calling to help others with addiction while living in a recovery house. He enrolled in college with the goal of becoming a counselor, and he’s focused on working with addicted teens. “I’ve arrived at my life’s calling,” he says.
Today Troy helps the parents of addicted teens and the teens themselves get off drugs. His first book, My Teen Off Drugs, offers parents a proven approach to successfully intervening in their child’s drug abuse. Troy continues to focus on the counseling of teens, and his personal coaching and counseling for both parents and teens helps families in crisis every day.
